Leader:

The overall record for the Belmont Stakes is held by the famous Secretariat (1973). This magnificent horse ran it in an astonishing time of 2:24.00 flat, broke the fraction records, which he maintains until today. Secretariat won by 31 lengths that day. His time over the 1 ½ mile track has never been seriously challenged since.

Fun fact:

The Stakes’s official drink is currently  ‘the Belmont Jewel’, which is mixed using bourbon, lemonade and pomegranate juice. It hasn’t always been the official drink of the event. Previously, this was a title for the ‘White Carnation’, but that was then replaced by the ‘Belmont Breeze’. Neither drink was popular. This caused the organizers to create the Jewel in 2011.
