Epsom Oaks Day

On a day that racecourse bookmakers and paying customers were allowed back on course, there were two tremendous stories emanating from the two feature races. Pyledriver provided the ‘fairy tale’ victory that racing thrives on by winning the Group 1 Coral Coronation Cup at a rain-soaked Epsom.

News Roundup

Trainer George Baker has hit out at the levels of prize money in the UK. Talking on Goodwin TV he said, ‘It would be wonderful if in a few years’ time on a mid-week meeting we were running around for rather more than a chocolate cake and a rosette which is what is happening now.’

Weekend Winners

My weekend started up at Bath Racecourse on Friday. There were eight races with paying customers and bookmakers on the course for the first time since March 2020. It rained and blew a gale for most of the day, and nobody gave a hoot, it was smiles all around, a real party atmosphere. The beginning of the end of our Covid nightmare has begun. The bookmakers all reported that the punters were keen to bet and to bet in cash. Happy days.

Weekend of Classy Performances

Racing fans enjoyed a TV viewing, still sadly not race going, treat over the weekend with some pulse pumping performances out on the turf as the big guns were produced from some of the top yards. Classic Pointers

There was a shock to some serious backers in Wednesday’s Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (Group 3) when Aidan O’Brien’s Snowfall obliged at 14/1. The 11/10 favourite Noon Star was 3 ¾ lengths back in second with 15/8 Teona half a length further back in third. Instagram horse racing fans have latched on to an account @thepunter2020 which is the handle for professional punter Martin Raymond. Martin has been sharing his life and tipping ‘wheelbarrow jobs’ on the site for a while now.

Chester May 2021 Meeting Review

The Chester May meeting provides some welcome high-class midweek racing over three days on the Roodee. In 2021 the meeting was forced to take place with just a few owners present and lacked the usual atmosphere, but we still saw high-quality racing nonetheless.

Looking back at Punchestown 2021

The annual Punchestown Festival is one of the highlights in the Irish National Hunt calendar and one of the most eagerly anticipated meetings of the season. This demanding track is right-handed and undulating, with the races always truly run and providing a stiff test of stamina (even though the ground has usually dried up and rode “good” on all five days this year).

Looking back at Aintree

The Randox Grand National at Aintree went ahead this year after missing out in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Taking place behind closed doors for the first time in its history, the meeting went ahead on perfect “good to soft” ground with the clerk of the course doing a terrific job to ensure superb jumping ground.
